Stoughton, Massachusetts — September 20, 2026 — How far can wildfire pollution travel? New research published in Atmospheric Environment followed particulate matter across an 11,000 km Arctic journey from Iceland to Alaska, using a Particles Plus 7301-AQM1 aboard the icebreaker Le Commandant Charcot.
Researchers identified four major PM events, including visible wildfire smoke north of Victoria Island where PM2.5 peaked at 58 million particles/m³. Remarkably, the smoke observed and measured at the vessel was not detected by NOAA’s satellite-based wildfire smoke map at that location.
And this isn’t the first time a Particles Plus 7000 Series monitor has gone to the Arctic.
In previous research in Tuktoyaktuk, Canada, Northumbria University researchers deployed 7000 Series monitors at fixed outdoor locations and aboard a vehicle to investigate particulate pollution from unpaved Arctic roads.
Different studies. Different sources. Same need for reliable measurements in places where monitoring isn’t easy.
That’s what the Particles Plus 7000 and 8000 Series are built for. Compact, battery-powered particle counters give researchers and air quality professionals the flexibility to take particle measurements beyond the lab and traditional monitoring station, whether that means a remote field site, a moving vehicle, or a ship crossing the Arctic.
Durable. Remote. Battery powered. Ready to go where your measurements take you.
